British Army Fijians Donate To Red Cross

British Army units have donated cash to the Fiji Red Cross and the donation was made on their behalf by British High Commissioner to Fiji Roderick Drummond.

Mr Drummond presented a $43,300 cheque to the Fiji Red Cross at their office in Gorrie Street on Wednesday.

“We are delighted to come here to Fiji Red Cross who has done a remarkable work over the last few years and in particular for Cyclone Winston relief efforts.

“Different organisations in the UK have been raising funds in different ways to play their part to contribute to the relief supplies,” Mr Drummond said.

Mr Drummond acknowledged the presence of the Fijians serving in the British Army.

“The many Fijians in the British Army and their friends in the wider community have done different fundraising events in different army units.

“And some of them have come together to make a contribution to the Fiji Red Cross Society,” he said.

Fiji Red Cross Society director-general Filipe Nainoca, in accepting the donation, said: “It was one of the most difficult cyclones to respond to and we have a soft heart for the British as the founders of the Red Cross have roots from Britain.”
