The Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration Timoci Natuva not only attended the VII International Meeting of High-Level Officials Responsible for Security Matters in Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russia on Monday, May 23 to May 25, 2016.

He also signed the MOU between the executive office of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the Ministry for Defence, National Security and Immigration of the Republic of Fiji on Wednesday  May 25, 2016.

The signing event commenced with a closed bilateral between the secretary general of the National Security Council of Russia, His Excellency Nikolai Patrushev and  Minister Natuva.

Fiji had established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union on January 30, 1974 and on February 8, 2010 Ambassador Isikeli Mataitoga presented credentials to the then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

In February 2012, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov visited Fiji in the first-ever visit of a high-level Russian official.

During Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s inaugural visit to Russia in 2013, five bilateral agreements were signed, including new protocols on military technical co-operation.

Russia’s new Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated that Russia wanted to pay particular attention to assisting Fiji with its UN peacekeeping deployments.

The Prime Minister’s bilateral agreements have forged the increasing positive relations on Defence Co-operation with the Russian Federation with the careful guidance and co-ordination of Fiji’s accredited Ambassador to Russia Mr Mataitoga.

This MOU signing provides a framework for both parties to establish regular consultations and exchange of views on matters of common interest related to national, regional and international security.
