Vunayasi District School created history by winning their first two gold medals in the Fiji National Swimming Championships at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva yesterday.

Kelemedi Dawai won the Under- 8 Boys 50 metres breaststroke while Kelera Naturagalevu won the U14 Girls 50 metres backstroke.

Located in Dratabu Village, Nadi, home of Vodafone Fijian 7s reps Samisoni Viriviri and Kitione Taliga, the school is taking part in the competition for the first time.

Teacher Nemani Veitaladrua said 17 swimmers (13 boys and four girls) took part.

“We’re very happy with their performance especially being newcomers to the championship,” Veitaladrua said.

“The competition has been really fun and exciting for our students. Most of the students play rugby and netball.

“So this year we thought of introducing another new sport. We started taking swimming lessons and from then on we decided to pick some students to represent the school in this year’s championships.

“This is the best decision because now the students have another sport to excel in and not just rugby and netball.”

The main aim for Vunayasi District is to expose their swimmers and get them to experience top level competitions.

“We use the Nadi Sports Club pool as most of the students are used to swimming in the river beside the village.

“But coming here to compete is another level,” he said.

“Our main aim was to come and expose our swimmers and let them have some fun and experience swimming at competition level.

“So we are all looking forward to the second day.” The competition ends today.
