The Vodafone national football team suffered a 3-1 loss to New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup opener at Port Moresby’s Sir John Guise Stadium in Papua New Guinea yesterday.

Playing without coach Frank Farina, the Roy Krishna led-side preferred to play a defensive game that had them on the back foot most of the time.

The All Whites took the lead in the 16th minute through Themistoklis Tzimopoulos, who tapped the ball in from close range following a good reflex save by goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau. In the 34th minute defender Alvin Singh was shown the yellow card.

But in the 41st minute Rory Fallon increased their tally 2-0 with a close range rebounding shot.

This woke the Fijians up as they went all out on attack and a minute into injury time midfielder Setareki Hughes was fouled in the penalty spot and Krishna scored from the spot kick.

In the second half defender Remeru Tekiata received a yellow for a tackle on Wood. But in the 61st minute Wood made it 3-1 with a low shot to the left corner, as the ball goes under the diving Tamanisau.

Stylish Ba midfielder Malakai Tiwa came in to replace Iosefo Verevou but all his efforts were in vain as the All Whites held on to win.
