Top seed William O’Connell is on track to defend his title at the Fiji Tattslotto Tennis Open Championship at Denarau, Nadi today.

The 23-year-old Lautoka native is favourite to win the title back-to-back after he defeated Alexandre Blasco of New Caledonia 6-1, 6-1 in the men’s Open Singles semi-final yesterday.

He expects an uphill battle from Willam Bruchard of New Caledonia in today’s final. Bruchard managed to cause an upset win over Gilles Do Gouy of New Zealand, who is also captain of the Pacific team to the Davis Cup.

In the women’s Open Singles it will be an all Fiji final where top seed Tarani Kamoe take on number two seed Annie Shannon.

Kamoe had to come from behind to beat Mulan Kamoe (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) while Shannon beat Lorraine Bainimataku (Vanuatu) 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Tournament referee David Smit said the competition was really impressive with players showing their skills under the western heat.

“We have the final day which is tomorrow (today) and competition is at its best with countries in the Pacific participating,” he said.
