Since Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) improved the Muaniweni Road in Naqali, close to 200 vegetable, dalo and cassava farmers living along the road are already reporting an improvement in their access to the markets.

FHH is grading and resheeting the road surface with gravel, as well as removing over-grown vegetation and cleaning out drainage along the road edges.

Farmer Sen Narayan said he was now happy and relieved because he knows now that his farm had a future in the market.

“Before, taking my produce to market was a struggle. On rainy days the road would get flooded and really muddy, making it hard for farmers and for students going to school. Carriers and four-wheel drives were reluctant to carry produce because of the road,” he said.

According to Mr Narayan, the three-kilometre road, which is connected to the Sawani /Serea Highway by Savu Road, had not been worked on for “more than seven years.”

Now he and his neighbours can easily access markets in Nausori.

Fulton Hogan Hiways is working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority to provide road maintenance in the Central, Eastern and Northern Divisions.
