Only five houses out of the 18 at Tabuya Village in Kadavu are fit for living after sea swells last week.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday by the Provincial Administrator Kadavu (PA) Peni Tora from Vunisea yesterday.

He said the Health Department was at the village on Saturday to carry out their assessment and also sprayed the five identified houses.

Mr Tora said the villagers were still occupying the two houses on the hill and they had also started their clean up.

In their meeting last Friday he said they all agreed to relocate and the new site had been finalised by the landowners and the Ministry of the iTaukei Affairs.

According to Mr Tora, clothes had been distributed to the villagers.

He said he had submitted a report on Tabuya to the Commissioner Eastern last week.

Meanwhile, former United Nations worker Aloesi Kaleca thanked the Government departments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who had given support to members of Tabuya villagers badly affected by sea swell last week.

He said the Police and military personnel from Vunisea immediately moved to the village and helped relocate villagers into higher ground.

“My newly-built house became the evacuation centre one and another evacuation centre two,” Mr Kaleca said.

He said the village relocation should be prioritised now.
