The 2016 South Pacific Bowling Carnival will prove tough this year with over 100 bowlers taking part on the first day of competitions at the Suva Bowling Club yesterday.

Suva Bowling Club’s Dr Joji Ralovo said judging by the outcome of the Pineapple Cup on Saturday, this year’s carnival would be a challenging one.

“When you look at the carnival competition wise, it has gone a step up.”

“The defending champions of the Pineapple Cup could not defend their titles,” Ralovo said.

“So that goes to show exactly how tough the competition is, we have young and new bowlers giving those bowlers who has been around for ages a hard time.

“We have around 80 bowlers from Australia and New Zealand and that is the biggest number of overseas bowlers we have ever had.

“Their inclusion in the competition has blown things wide open and provided good competition to our local bowlers which is a good thing.

“So Sunday’s has been a good start to the carnival and the weather has been fantastic so I think we are on track to a good week of bowling.”

Ralovo said the carnival has become a tradition for most and also a platform where those who have something in common can mingle and create lasting friendships.

“We are celebrating 60 years of the bowling carnival and during this time we only just came to find out that two bowlers have been coming to the carnival for 28 years now,” he said.

“We feel very fortunate that we have bowlers who are passionate but not only about the sport but the carnival as well.

“The atmosphere we have created in the past is such that most don’t only come to bowl but to have fun and create lasting friendships.”

The South Pacific Bowling Carnival will end on Sunday.
