One way to address the smoking issue in Fiji is to use plain packaging to reduce cigarettes’ attractiveness, says Dr Meciusela Tuicakau.

He said there was an important and urgent need to address this.

The Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor Meciusela Tuicakau, said this during the World No Tobacco Day celebrations at TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education in Labasa on Tuesday.

He said the theme for this year World No Tobacco Day was ‘Get Ready for Plain Packaging’.

“Plain packaging also called standard packaging, emphasise on measures to restrict or prohibit the use of logos, colours, brand images or promotional information on packaging,” Dr Tuicakau said.

Two countries that have so far introduced this concept are Australia and Ireland.
