An Australian company Tyrepower has partnered with Sea Mercy Fiji in lending a hand to rebuild the lives of the people of Makogai.

The island of Makogai in the Lomaiviti group was not spared by Cyclone Winston on February 20 which destroyed the primary school on the island.

Tyrepower chief executive officer David Wilson said Tyrepower held its international conference in Fiji in April and opted to assist with an auction which raised $86,975.

Tyrepower is Australasia’s largest independent tyre retail chain and is one of the larger tyre manufacturers and a primary distribution channel in Australia and New Zealand.

“Tyrepower donated these funds to Makogai Primary School, located on an island with about 38 children,” Mr Wilson said.

“We hope that our donation can contribute to bringing some much-needed relief to the Makogai community and allow the children to return to learning in a happy and healthy classroom.

“Our thanks go out to our fantastic suppliers who so kindly donated the auction items and thank the Tyrepower dealer Network and staff for being so generous in their bids and donations and assisting us in raising these much-needed funds.”

Sea Mercy Fiji president Nigel Skeggs said the funds were also used to hire vessels out of Port Denarau to deliver much needed food, clothing and basic necessities to those islands.

He said there was a team working closely with the villagers in building lives.

Sea Mercy Fiji is an NGO with an international access to a network of yachts based at the Port Denarau and throughout Fiji and through this network visit remote locations distributing vital supplies.
