Fiji has benefited under the Green Climate Fund after signing the Paris Agreement, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He revealed this in Parliament on Tuesday after outspoken Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavo asked in the House for an explanation of how Fiji has benefitted after signing the agreement.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said a fund had been set up called the Green Climate Fund (GFC) which in fact had already benefitted Fiji ; as part of the adaptation measures.

He said the Water Authority of Fiji had a five-year plan for the implementation of water reticulated systems, in particular the Nausori-Suva corridor which was a project in excess of $250 million over five years.

“We put that up as a proposal to the Green Climate Fund and they in fact committed through the Asian Development Bank, a grant of about $32 million.”

He said it was a grant and not a loan that would be implemented to this water reticulation system for the greater Suva-Nausori area.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said similarly there were other forms of finance available.

“Some of it by way of soft loans and some of it by way of grants,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Paris Agreement helped us put climate change within the global arena.

He said it had been ratified by a number of countries around the world where they had recognised climate change as a reality.
