Team Fiji are into the final phase of preparation for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August, says a senior official.

Team Fiji chef de mission Cathy Wong said yesterday the management team are working very hard to ensure that the team’s journey to Rio is event free and successful both on and off the field.

“For the athletes that have qualified, it is now about staying focused on the task,” she said.

“For those yet to qualify, it is about stepping up a notch to achieve their ultimate dream.”

With the national athletics team preparing for the upcoming Melanesian Games, Wong went on to give updates on other sports that are working towards securing a spot for Rio.

Judo: “Josateki Naulu is training in Japan with his coach and training partner. He is currently ranked second in Oceania and is highly likely to get the Oceania slot in his current form,”

Archery: “Robert Elder has received a quota place from his results at the Oceania Championship held in Tonga in April. He must now achieve or shoot the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) of 630 in a recognised Rio Olympic qualifying event.

“Elder is currently training in Thailand and will be attending the qualifying event in Turkey in June, where he hopes to shot 630. He is currently shooting at 628.”

Wong added that as the Olympic Games is just around the corner our national team would need all the support they can get.

“Our marketing team have worked hard to secure sponsors for Team Fiji and to create opportunities for the public to engage in with the team.

“We urge the people of Fiji to lend us their support and be part of this historic journey with Team Fiji,” she added.
