A security guard at the Lautoka rubbish dump has caught a man using a piece of mosquito coil to deliberately set the dump on fire.

The fire at the dump and the smoke emitted has been ongoing for the past two weeks.

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said the culprit, who had been deliberately setting the dump on fire, had been identified to the Police.

Mr Nakauvadra said the fire had been lit in four different places earlier this week.

“Our security guard at the dump caught a man with a lit mosquito coil lighting the fires,” he said.

The fire has caused problems for families in Lovu and Drasa. Mr Naukavadra said they had to pull workers from other job sites to help combat the fire and this had put pressure on their resources.

The biggest problem is the fire that is burning from beneath the pile of rubbish.

Mr Nakauvadra is thankful that the Commissioner Western’s Office had supplied water pumps to help douse the fire.

“The pumps are used to draw water from a nearby creek to help douse the fire.”
