Talks are under way between the Fijian Government and People’s Republic of China for the purchase of a Hydrographic Vessel, says Timoci Natuva.

The Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration revealed this in Parliament on Wednesday.

Mr Natuva said it was part of the Fiji Hydrographic Service’s plans.

He said the vessel design had been agreed by both countries but the tender process would be done in China for the construction of the vessel.

He said the vessel characteristics are length of overall: 43.5 meters, double hull aluminum (catamaran) breath 13.6 metres, draught 2.1m and displacement of 300 tonnes.

“The Fiji Hydrographic Service was established to cater for the maritime needs of the nation with regard to safety of navigation of over our 300 habitable islands,” Mr Natuva said.

“The work of the hydrographic service is critical to the nation’s economy.

He said Fiji had the ability to produce and disseminate its own charts and the British Hydrographic is the Principle Charting Authority for Fiji charts.

However, Mr Natuva said FHS was in the process of taking over the printing of its own updated charts for the whole of Fiji which was aimed to be completed by 2021.
