A bail hearing for a 85-year-old man charged with raping a 11-year-old girl, was stopped abruptly when the accused fell ill.

Govind Sami Raju complained of severe chest pains when he appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.

Magistrate Hamza stopped the  proceedings. Family members of the accused gathered around him inside the court room to comfort him.

Magistrate Hamza ordered that the accused should be taken to Colonial Memorial War (CWM) Hospital for medical examination under Police guard.

Police prosecutor Raymond Filipe requested the court that the outcome of the bail hearing should depend on Raju’s medical findings.

The court has been adjourned to June 6.

The accused will appear for his first call at the Suva High Court in Suva on June 10.

Raju is charged with one count each for indecent assault and rape between April and May 2016.

The alleged indecent assault incident took place on April 19, 2016, while the alleged rape incident took place between May 1 and May 28, 2016.
