The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, yesterday clarified again in Parliament that a gesture he did last year was not to impersonate a monkey but Darth Vader.

Darth Vader is a character from the movie Star Wars.

Mr Sayed-Khayum made the clarification during a heated exchange with Opposition Whip, Ratu Isoa Tikoca, in Parliament.

The debate went out of context when Ratu Isoa started posing questions that seemed irrelevant to the issue that was discussed.

Ratu Isoa claimed that the Attorney- General had labelled indigenous people as ‘monkeys’.

“You did that in front of everybody and people, you acted a monkey referring to native people; that is what you did, actions speak louder than words,” he said.

Mr Sayed – Khaiyum, who is married to Ella Sayed-Khaiyum, daughter of SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka, responded that his wife too was an indigenous.

“Does that mean that I am calling my lovely wife who I love so much a monkey? Are my children half monkies? Is my father-in-law, a monkey? Of course not; this is not the principle on this side of the House,” he said.

He said the Prime Minister would not entertain such derogatory remarks of anybody because they did not believe in such attitude

Mr Sayed–Khaiyum said the reality was they had to be vigilant in protecting the sanctity of Parliament and not to allow communal flames to ruin the future generations of Fiji.
