The assessment of homes under the Government’s Help for Home Initiative will come to an end for the Western Division this month and this was confirmed by the divisional planning officer West, Sitiveni Tavaga.

In an interview, Mr Tavaga said people whose names were not in the list of recipients after the cut-off date could still apply for the aid.

“Our cut-off date as far as our verification is concerned is on the 17th of this month and if their names are not in the list, then they can come to us and we will assist them with the verifications,” Mr Tavaga said.

He said the rehabilitation work was well underway and those who had already received their cards were purchasing building materials and had started reconstructing their houses.

“People in the West are coping well with the re-building of homes and we are mainly glad with the Ra people as they have taken the initiative to get back to normal when it comes to food security and re-building of homes,” he said.

“Some of them have already built their homes and some are in the process of re-building their homes without even getting any assistance from the Government.”

The divisional planning officer urged other members of the public not to misuse these funds, rather use it wisely.

“Our kerekere that we have been doing around now is not to misuse the help that is given by the Government,” Mr Tavaga said.

“The Government is doing it for them in good faith and they are supposed to use the money wisely and not providing false information to obtain benefit.”
