Big Task Ahead

The William O’Connell captained-national team, today take on favourites New Caledonia in the Punjas Oceania Tennis Championship in Suva.

O’Connell said yesterday he was looking forward to the semifinal challenge.

“It’s going to be an extremely tough one especially they are the region’s most dominant side,” he said.

O’Connell said he was happy that they had reached this far.

“We played Tahiti in the morning in our final pool match and we got through that one. It came down to the doubles and we managed to do that on a separate tie break but I’m happy to come out of our pool. We played Guam in the quarterfinals in the second match and won that one pretty convincingly. We took both singles and managed to get the double as well.”

The Fiji White side of Reynal Singh, Krishan Raju and Kunal Singh lost to Australia 3-0 while the Fiji Team Blue side of Finau Pa, Neil Wivou and Sumit Lal lost to Vanuatu and New Zealand 3-0 respectively.

WOMENS

The national women’s team started on a high note. The combination of Tarani Kamoe, Annie Shannon and Vienna Kumar saw them beat Vanuatu 3-0 in their opening game. They went on to beat the Northern Marianas by the same score.

The Fiji White side of Ruby Coffin and Mulan Kamoe however, struggled in the competition as they lost to Australia 3-0 and New Caledonia 2-1.
