Eight students from Swami Vivekananda College have qualified for the 11th Oceania Swimming Championship in Suva from June 19-25.

They are Yolani Blake, Tevita Fotofili, Ella Rasau, Gordon Whippy, Netani Ross, Moana Wind, national reps Taichi Vakasama and Rosemarie Rova.

The College yesterday acknowledged the athletes for their performance at the National Schools Swimming Championship last weekend.

Impressively, the swimmers achieved more than just winning the girls category but broke 21 of total 35 records, thanks to the combined effort put in by coaches Marlene Blake and Rosemary Rova.

“The SVC students did very well with the girls winning and the boys coming in second place to Marist Brothers High School,” Blake said.

“They trained really hard in the beginning of the year and they have maintained their fitness but apart from that they all enjoyed themselves. I give all the credit to the students because they were the ones that were swimming and did all the hard work in the pool.”

She added that most of the SVC students  broke their individual records and have  been stamping their mark since 2012.

College principal Gyan Chand Sumer said their achievement has created a new era.

“Everybody is very happy, the parents, teachers and management and the SVC family as a whole,” he said.

“We won more medals this year compared to previous years.”

The school retained the girls’ division title for two years in a row.
