Murder Accused’s Lawyer Told: Liaise With ODPP Before Trial
Josua Colanaudolu

Defence lawyer of Deuba rape and murder accused Josua Colanaudolu has been asked by High Court in Suva to liaise with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Justice Salesi Temo told defence lawyer Barbara Malimali to clarify matters in writing such as X-ray reports and medical review of the accused before the matter heads into trial.

Justice Temo also informed Ms Malimali if the ODPP failed to respond, she could file a complaint with court.

The matter was called yesterday for a pre-trial conference.

During conference, explicit details of the allegations were presented to court, detailing how and when the 12 counts of rape, 10 of abduction, one of murder and one of indecently annoying a female allegedly took place.

Assistant DPP Lee Burney told the court that between 1998 and 2006, the accused was a “dangerous sexual predator who targeted young and vulnerable girls in his community”.

The court was also told that at the time of the alleged incidents, all four victims were between the ages of 14 and 19.

Mr Burney told the court that with the first victim, the incidents of rapes allegedly took place at Colanaudolu’s home.

The first victim was 14-years-old at the time of the first incident.

Mr Bruney said he would be relying on the victim’s direct evidence when trial begins.

The second victim was 19 and the third victim was 17 at the time of the alleged incidents.

For both matters, Mr Burney would also be relying on direct evidence of the victims.

Ms Malimali told the court that they would challenge the alleged admission of the accused and sought time to submit written challenge.

Time has been given till June 22, when the matter would be called again.
