A pastor facing 10 criminal charges; six of rape and four of indecent assault, yesterday pleaded not guilty to all charges at the Suva High Court.

Jone Cokanauto, 54, appeared before Justice Salesi Temo.

Defence lawyer Simione Valenitabua had requested the court if the plea could be deferred but Justice Temo told him that the plea had to be taken for the case to move forward and whatever queries the defence had would be looked into after the plea had been taken.

All the 10 counts were read to him in the iTaukei language.

Cakanauto kept his head down while the charges were being read to him and kept shaking his head and repeating “sega” (no) to all counts.

Justice Temo asked the prosecution when they would be prepared to outline the theory of the case and the evidence that they would be able to produce as grounds for conviction.

The court has been adjourned for a pre-trial conference on July 18.
