Tarai’s Presentation Sparks Discussion Online

Ideas worth spreading is the catchphrase for TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talks and seven Fijians who recently shared their ideas in front of a local crowd in Suva are now watching them connect with a global audience.

In the 24 hours since they were released online they have attracted more than 8000 views and sparked debates and discussions on a range of important issues.

One of the most popular presentations has been the one made by Jope Tarai, who grew up in a household where domestic violence was a regular event. His talk reflects on the effect that this experience had on him and his family and looks at links between culture and gender imbalance.

It urges current and future generations to reimagine the Fijian man as someone who “can use his power and privilege to not only see the status quo as what it is, but also question and change it.”

The first TED conference was the brainchild of Richard Saul Wurman in 1984, and it has since developed a large global following with talks now taking place in over 100 different languages. The TEDx series are organised independently by local communities.

TedxSuva was held in front of a live audience at the University of the South Pacific in April and was the first of its kind to be held in a Pacific Island country.

A full list of the speakers and their TEDxSuva talks can be seen online now by visiting www.tedxsuva.com
