A new undersea submarine cable project landing spot will be at Vatuwaqa in Suva. But the North is not being forgotten.

This was revealed by the Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during a Budget forum at Labasa College yesterday.

He said this submarine cable would come from Samoa in between Taveuni and Savusavu then it would land at Vatuwaqa.

“Vatuwaqa is the landing spot for what they call Southern Cross cable coming all the way from Australia, right up to Hawaii to North America,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“The good thing for Fiji is that the cable will land in Fiji and connect onwards to America. To enable this connectivity they have to bring pipes and they found that the Samoan cable was cheaper for them.

“This is an opportunity for us.

Because it is coming in between Taveuni and Savusavu we are now going to get some funding from World Bank which is about $4 million to $5 million or maybe $6 million and connect a pipe out of that pipe to land in Savusavu.”

“Once that lands in Savusavu, Vanua Levu will have higher, faster speed to access data internet services and connectivity,” he said.

“The reason why we are doing this is that this can bring in people who want to set up call centre or data centre in Vanua Levu.

“I know that this thing cannot happen immediately but it can be in the long run.

But of course we need numbers; you need people who have certain level of education

“The Commissioner Northern can use that service to assist farmers with information.

“So the cost of internet becomes cheaper. We need to place these enablers to open up potential to any places.”
