Religion has been targeted as an avenue to raise awareness on the protection of the environment.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar made the comments yesterday at the launch of the Environment Day Celebration at the Fiji National University Lautoka campus in Natabua.

The occasion is celebrated throughout the world on June 5 which Mr Kumar said was dedicated to Mother Nature and the environment and what it provided for everyone.

“Today, we can also reflect on all negative effects to humanity and all creation as a result to damage of basic natural resources such as water, air and land brought about by human induced factors,” Mr Kumar said.

Also present were the United States Ambassador Judith Cefkin, Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau, chancellor of FNU Ikbal Jannif and Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra.

It also marked the inauguration of the first ever Green Scouts unit.

Mr Kumar said his ministry had put in place measures to make Fiji achieve sustainable economic development and looked to other avenues such as religion to create awareness.

“Religion has a specific role to play in proclaiming moral values, which is none other than responsibility towards self, others and creation,” he said.

Mr Kumar said with the international theme for National Environment Day being ‘Go Wild for Life’ and with that human beings should be good stewards of the environment and should safeguard illegal activities, unsustainable use of its natural resources and its further destruction.

In protecting the environment, his ministry was promoting the same concept given by God which promoted sustainable use of natural resources.

He urged all people and stakeholders and religions to merge on a common platform of protecting the environment.
