Half of the school ground which runs along Bau Street in front of Marist Brothers High School in Flagstaff, Suva, will soon see development despite concerns raised by some former students.

Marist Brothers’ Brother Kees Van Der Weert said the project had been signed and a building permit had been issued.

“The brothers led by the leadership in New Zealand have leased the front portion of the ground right along Bau Street as a business development where we will build a plaza,” he said.

Brother Kees revealed this while responding to a question raised at the Marist Old Boys (MOB) Association annual general meeting on Saturday to clarify the progress of the development.

The land owned by the Marist Brothers and money from the development will be used to help fund their education activities and work.

Concerns were earlier raised by former students of the school that the development would block the iconic view and the school would not be visible from Bau Street.

Brother Kees said the groundbreaking ceremony would occur any time soon but did not ascertain any specific date.

“This is for the sake of the future of the brothers’ mission, which is not just Marist Brothers High School, but also the other four institutions that are run by the brothers in Suva,” he said.

Brother Kees said the lease from the plaza would ensure financial income for the assistance of the mission; the brothers’ schools and the brothers themselves.

He also called on the support from the MOB Association and its newly-elected committee towards the development.
