A new president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will be elected in New York on June 13.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday by the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Robin Nair.

“Election on 13 June! Fingers crossed. We have an excellent candidate,” Mr Nair said in his reply via email for the elections for the presidency of the 71st session of the assembly.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson is Fiji’s candidate for the top post.

Meanwhile addressing the 70th UNGA in New York last September, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said Fiji had been a member of the UN since her Independence in October 1970.

He said Fiji believed the time had come for the Pacific Islands to provide the Assembly’s President, and had put forward a candidate for the Assembly’s 71st Session.

In an earlier interview with Mr Thomson he said was ready for the top post and he had never fought a losing battle.

Mr Thomson will be up against the government of the Republic of Cyprus nominee, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis.

The current UNGA president is Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark and his tenure ends in September.
