More Structural Fire This Year

The National Fire Authority (NFA) advises home owners to be mindful of fire safety at home.

The NFA has recorded 41 structural fires so far this year as compared to 34 last year for the same period.

Chief Fire Officer Qionilau Moceitai said the NFA is concerned with the increasing number of property fires.

“Forty-one properties have been destroyed by fire this year which is a great concern to the NFA.

“It is very important that property owners are mindful of fire safety as fire is a very catastrophic disaster and being cautious is very important.

“Nearly everyday fire ignition sources are used at home and as such there is a high possibility of a fire happening at home,”Mr Moceitai said.

“Home owners are reminded to ensure fire ignition sources are handled with extra care.  Do not leave cooking unattended, electrical appliances must always be switched off properly and don’t overload powerboards.”

Mr Moceitai also advises on the importance of fire safety education at home.

“Home owners are advised to engage in fire safety discussion with their family at home and also conduct fire safety checks at home before going to bed or leaving the house as this will assist in the prevention of home fires,” Mr Moceitai added.
