The Land Transport Authority is concerned about the safety of the public while travelling in public service vehicles.

The issue was raised after Fiji Sun took a picture of a Nasese Bus overloaded with passengers and school students crowded and a Police officer standing on the doorstep in uniform.

Land Transport Authority chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said overloading buses was illegal and drivers would be taken to task for such activities.

“Overloading buses or any public service vehicles are illegal in Fiji as it risks the lives of the public travelling,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

“Seeing a Police officer standing on the door step of the overloaded bus is just unbelievable because it is the Police officers responsibility to ensure the safety of the public and stop bus drivers overloading the buses.

“It is extremely dangerous to travel in a bus with overloaded passengers as it may cost them their own lives.

“It is the drivers of any vehicle running on the road to ensure the safety of their passengers.”

Director of Traffic Senior Superintended of Police Mahesh Mishra said he was not aware of the situation but was concerned about the safety of the public.

“Any person travelling in a vehicle must secure their position while travelling for their own safety,” he said.

Mr Tuinaceva said any public service vehicle caught overloading would be fined $100 on the spot.
