A senior citizen organisation has applauded the efforts of the Fijian Government in recognising the welfare of the ageing population.

“We are grateful to the Fijian Government for its tremendous support in addressing the welfare of senior citizens, through programs like Social Pension Scheme, Food Voucher Programme and Bus Fare Subsidy, including the recent payout for those senior citizens who were affected by cyclone Winston,” said the president of Senior Citizens Charitable Trust of Nadi Palpana Nand.

Mr Nand also commended the Government’s vision on creating an inclusive and supportive environment for the elderly.

“Our major project is to build a community centre for the senior citizens and we have sought the support of various stakeholders in this endeavor.  We are also very pleased with the work done by Madam Minister, Honorable Rosy Akbar for her courage and dedication in reaching out and advocating for the rights and interests of senior citizens in this country,” Mr Nand said.

While speaking at the Trust’s first anniversary celebrations last week, Ms Akbar reiterated the importance of increased awareness on elderly care in Fiji.

“The ministry will not tolerate any abuse or neglect of our seniors and we look at case by case. We appeal to the families of these senior citizens in this age care homes, to please do the right thing, come and talk to us.   NCOP also provided financial grants, which has benefitted various institutional homes that look after the senior citizens and persons living with disabilities.
