The remains found inside the car that mysteriously disappeared 10 years ago in Navua have been confirmed to be human bones.

The car was retrieved from the Navua River last month after a report was lodged by ex investigation officer Pardeep Kumar who did the intial investigation on the missing family.

Taxi driver Davendra Kumar, 42, his wife, Nirupa Devi, 32, daughter Dipshika Kumar, 9, and son Edwin Kumar, 3, were last seen leaving the Assemblies of God Church at Calia in Navua at around 9.30pm on the night of April 19, 2006.

Mr Kumar had received a report from a diver who was diving for fish and discovered the car near the Navua Bridge.

Assistant commissioner of Police Luke Navela said: “Tests conducted on the remains found inside the car confirms them to be human remains however we will need to get reference DNA samples from one of the family members to confirm if they do belong to one of the missing victims.

“Since it is a case dating back to over 10 years the team is meticulously going over the investigation file and this will take some time.”

A team from the Criminal Investigation Department is reviewing the file.
