Defending Starwood Golf Classic champion Brad Shilton of New Zealand is expected to face an intense challenge in his title defence, which starts today.

The Kiwi professional is among a competitive field in the country’s biggest pro-am golf tournament being held at Denarau Golf & Racquet Club and Natadola Bay Golf Club.

Other notable names are Mike Hendry, fresh from his win in the Japanese tour, Gerard Patterson who plays in the European and USA tour, NZ number one amateur Luke Toomey who is expecting to turn pro and the inaugural Fiji international winner Steve Jefferess.

Tournament director Richard Ellis said: “This is probably the best we have in all these years. Top New Zealand players are back with the Australians.

“The cyclones early in the year have not dampened the spirit of the golfers to be here in big numbers as we are told that we are actually helping the economy by playing here and supporting Fiji,” Jefferess said.  He indicated that the field has an impressive 240 golfers featuring 60 in the professional category with the prize money of $100,000 and more than $30,000 worth of consolation prizes for the amateur category.

Also winning teams in pro and amateurs in the gross and Stableford will win free entry next year.

Denarau Golf & Racquet Club manager David Roche said: “We have just upgraded all bunkers with new sand around the course in preparation for the tournament.”

Sheraton and Westin Resorts, Fiji, managing director, Shane Cunning, said, “It’s great to see the positive support from local and international golfers and sponsors alike. As a result, we are excited that the Starwood Golf Classic is going into its sixth successful year.”
