An uncle who raped his younger brother’s step-daughter was sentenced yesterday to 13 years, 6 months and 25 days in jail.

He appeared in the High Court in Suva before Justice Vincent Perera who told the accused he had breached the trust of the child.

The accused was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault while they were living together from 2010 to 2014.

Justice Perera said the accused was 38 years older than the victim and took advantage of his authority as he was supporting the victim financially.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 11 years. He has 30 days to appeal.

Meanwhile, the High Court also sentenced another man to 9 years and 10 months for rape.

Alafi Jone appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando. He was charged with one count each of rape and assault causing actual bodily harm. The offense took place on August 24, 2014.

At the time of the offence Jone was 32 years old and the victim was 26.

His non parole period is 8 years and 20 months.
