There has been an increase in the relief supplies given to Fiji three months post Tropical Cyclone Winston.

This was confirmed by the Director of the National Disaster Management Office Akapusi Tuifagalele at the Queen Victoria School visit on Sunday.

He said that Fiji had received a lot of supplies from friends and families residing overseas.

“We are currently receiving containers of relief supplies from overseas and we have also been pushing out the containers once it is cleared by the Customs,” Mr Tuifagalele said.

“We then send those supplies to all the divisions throughout Fiji and from there the divisional managers distribute them to the victims.

“We have already distributed numerous containers of supplies we have received just to ensure that the items that have an expiry date like canned foods is not kept but given to the families before it expires.

“Before the goods with expiry dates are sent out to the victims, we give the goods to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services team to ensure the food is good to eat for the safety and health of our people.

“Once we have clearance from the Ministry of Health, then we send them out to the villages and islands.”

Mr Tuifagalele said that this was the time ideal time to rebuild lives back, rebuild the communities so everything could go back to normal.

“Most of the items we are receiving right now are canned items and foods and other supplies.

“But we are requesting if they want to send goods to send the building materials so that it could help our families here rebuild their homes.”

Mr Tuifagalele said he was happy with the response from friends and families as well as nations provisions of supplies for TC Winston relief.
