The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy

Youths and children need to have the right mindset to prevent them from being affected by contemporary issues, says the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy.

Speaking at the Educators Forum at the Suva Civic Centre on Tuesday Mr Reddy said social issues like drugs, poverty, rape, teenage pregnancy, suicide, negligence, peer pressure, broken families  and loneliness continued to affect the youths.

“They are not able to openly express their thoughts and communicate about their problems and thus not able to change their situations. Some even go to the extent of ending their lives,” he said.

To minimise these issues and avoid suicides, Mr Reddy believes children need to have the right mindset to face the problems and tackle them well.

He said they should be able to break through the haunting circumstances, preconceived notions, narrow-mindedness and be able to confidently express their minds and hearts.

He reiterated that the Fijian Government was privileged that the camp would provide these values and realisation to the youths.

He thanked the organisers of the 1st International Youth Fellowship World Camp, Fiji for including an Education Forum as part of its programme.

Mr Reddy said Government’s priority was to make sure that our children were developed holistically.
