The Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, has given his assurance that New Zealand stands by Fiji.

He made the assurance after the traditional welcoming ceremony accorded to him by the Government and the people of Nakelo at the iTaukei Affairs Board ground at Nasese.

Mr Key also thanked the Fijian Government for its rehabilitation work on Cyclone Winston and expressed his condolences to the families of the 44 people who died as a result of the Cyclone Winston.

He was also impressed with how the nation stood united after Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Mr Key said he was pleased to be invited by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to visit Fiji.

During his brief visit Mr Key would hold discussions with Mr Bainimarama on how they could help Fiji further.

He was expected to dwell more on this matter during the banquet at Grand Pacific Hotel last night.

Mr Key will visit Naiyala High School today before he returns to New Zealand.

Naiyala High School was one of the many schools that were severely affected by Winston in February. The New Zealand Defence Force had helped rebuild the school.
