The Nadi Hospital morgue has undergone a major makeover to its facility to provide better services for the public.

The complete revamp of the building with an extension to the current structure is to cater for the demand and give the last rites of an individual with dignity and comfort.

About $15,000 has been poured into this upgrade and more will follow in the west if there is a request, says Mr Chand owner of the Sympathy Funeral Services.

“We also built a funeral shop and placed an office in there, the latest with painting and building general maintenance of the freezers,” he said.

There is now a washroom, water taps and water tanks which were not there previously.

Mr Chand formerly of Nawai, Nadroga comes from a farming background decided to pursue this business when his mother passed away in 1992. Prior to venturing into the funeral business he was into taxi business, a farmer and had a joint minibus.

The facility also hosts a mini-shop that consists of items needed during the funeral services.

The loss of a loved one is a stressful time for the family and consequently people miss out on buying items for rituals which this shop helps out at that last moment.

He said: “I have been helping management of Hospital especially Mortuary since the past five to six years. I have been upgrading within my company as well.

“This is our family business Sympathy funeral that has been running for over ten years now, they not only focused on local funerals but also international.

Mr Chand’s future plan is to build a dignified crematorium.

“I am requesting the Government if I get any aid from them to get a piece of land somewhere and start up a dignified funeral services just like the one in Nasinu.

“I want to start up something in Nadi, that people will use because population in Nadi is going up day by day and it’s a tourist town and it will be a city by 2017.”
