The Ministry of Foreign Affairs joins the rest of the nation in congratulating Fiji’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, on his recent election as President of the United Nations General Assembly 71st session.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said the recent election of Ambassador Thomson was great news for Fiji.

He went on to describe the win as unprecedented and historic for all Small Island Developing States.

“Congratulations to Ambassador Thomson for being elected as the president of the 71st General Assembly. It was a close one, with 94-90 votes, but we made it. We are proud of this achievement; well-deserved for Ambassador Thomson and for Fiji as a whole,” Ratu Inoke said.

Ratu Inoke said Ambassador Thomson would now oversee the process of electing a new UN Secretary-General to replace Ban Ki-Moon and spearhead the reforms at the UN during the year one of his tenure as president.

Ratu Inoke also thanked all the Fiji heads of missions overseas, the team at the Fiji Mission in New York and his officers from the ministry for their concerted effort during the campaign period.

“This shows what team work can do. I thank everyone for their effort towards this achievement – vinaka vakalevu”(thank you very much), he said.

Permanent Secretary Ambassador Ravindran Robin Nair said that Ambassador Thomson did Fiji proud with this achievement, as well as his other achievements as Fiji’s permanent representative to the UN.
