Passing Of Bill Will Give Life To UN Convention

If the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2016 is passed it will give life to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, says an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vueti May made submissions on the Bill on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the public hearing of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs in Parliament yesterday.

Mr May said the Bill made provisions for the protection of rights of persons with disabilities in accordance with the convention.

“This is essential to give life to the UNCRPD which Fiji has signed,” he said.

Principal foreign services officer Jojiana Cokanasiga said the Bill illustrated Fiji’s commitment to incorporate the convention provisions into the national law.

Ms Cokanasiga said that women should be considered in the Bill given that women and girls with disabilities were exposed to multiple layers of discrimination based on their gender and disability status.

“The implementation of the Bill and its enactment signals our commitment to recognising the right of persons with disabilities with special consideration for women with disabilities,” she said.
