With the Labasa Mill opening for cane processing today, farmers in the North were hard at work yesterday harvesting their cane.

Labasa sugarcane farmer, Mohammed Aiyub, said he could not wait to harvest sugarcane on his 30 acres of land.

“My family has been farming for the past 27 years and totally relies on the farm for our income,” he said.

“Now my cane is ready for harvest and I am looking forward to the mill to opening.”

With the 30 acres of land, Mr Aiyub is expecting to harvest 1000 tonnes of sugarcane which has a money value of $20,000.

Naduna farmer, Mohammed Hanif, who is also another successful farmer in Labasa said ‘farming is in his blood’.

“I just love farming as it has helped my family financially and has assisted me to send one of my sons overseas,” Mr Hanif said.

He said last year he got 600 tonnes and this year he aimed to get more than 700 tonnes.

Mr Hanif is involved in other farming activities like cattle, rice, poultry.

“This has been another source of income for the family and has also helped in supporting the major crop which is sugar,” he said.
