Disabled People To Have Full Say: Director Raj

Every person living with disabilities in Fiji will be able to meaningfully participate in all spheres of life if the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2016 is passed, says Ashwin Raj.

Mr Raj said if the approval of the UNCRPD was ratified without reservations as well the Bill passed it would extend dignity, equality and freedom to persons with disabilities.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director made these comments while making submissions on the Bill before the Standing Committee on Social Affairs chaired by Government member Viam Pillay in Parliament yesterday.

“It will not only create the conditions of possibility for a full ratification of the UNCRPD but will also be instrumental in enforcing the provisions set out in the UNCRPD,” Mr Raj said.

“It must be further noted that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2016 before the Parliament aligns with the imperatives of the constitutional provisions on the rights of persons with disabilities and encompasses of the most salient features of the UNDCRPD.”

Making submissions on the Right of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2016 before the Standing Committee on Social Affairs today are:

 Hilton Special School

 Fiji Disabled People Federation

 Fiji Paralympians Association

 Fiji Employers Federation
