Increasing intra-ACP and inter-ACP trade will boost the agricultural sector of the African Caribbean and the Pacific countries, says Roberto Ridolfi the director general of DEVCO of the European Commission.

Mr Ridolfi joined other eminent speakers including the executive director of International Trade Centre Arancha Gonzalez, and Assistant Secretary General of ACP Secretariat Viwanou Gnassounou, who spoke in detail about how agriculture could assist countries to achieve sustainable development goals.

Mr  Ridolfi is a former EU ambassador to Fiji and the Pacific, and was based in Suva.

They spoke at day one of the European Development Days which is currently underway in Brussels.

Mr Ridolfi said there also needed to be a change in the mindset and that farmers needed to be viewed as business men and women.

“There are a few issues here.  First, we have not seen any dramatic increase in intra-ACP trade facilitation,” he said.

“We need to pool our resources and explore the concept of agrify which is agriculture and finance.

“The financial institutions also need to be brought on board which is the second thing to explore here.

“Banks do not like anything small therefore opening up opportunities for small farmers is not often seen as favourable.”

Ms Gonzalez spoke about how the youth needed to relook at opportunities that farming explore.

Speaking about what has been noted closer to home – in Fiji, Ms Gonzalez said in order to attract talent into agricultural sector,  “we need to up our game.”
