A cyber crime bill is currently being drafted.

This was revealed yesterday by a Ministry of Defence, Immigration and National Security official before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence in Parliament.

Senior defence officer Joji Washington was responding to a question posed by the Member of Parliament, Jilila Kumar.

Mr Washington said the Bill encompassed offences committed through the internet which came under the definition of cyber crime.

He said they had consultations with various stakeholders around the country on the Bill including the Fiji Police Force, Solicitor-General’s Office and all internet service providers.

Mr Washington said there were cases of children being exploited on the internet in Fiji but there were no laws to address such issues like paedophiles.

He said they were looking at cyber security strategies and policies, and an online child protection service was expected to be launched soon. Edited by Naisa Koroi
