The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given the green light to Pacific Islands Tax Administrators Association (PITAA) Interim Head of Secretariat to set up a Permanent Secretariat in Fiji.

This after the signing of the Host Country Agreement between Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and Interim Head of Secretariat for PITAA, FRCA acting chief executive, Visvanath Das.

“We hope this will help promote closer cooperation and coordination of information sharing in tax administration and policy formulation in Pacific Island countries,” Mr Kubuabola said.

Mr Das said: “Today marks another milestone achievement for the PITAA Secretariat. After the signing, the PITAA Secretariat will now recruit staff for secretariat positions to fully operate and prepare for the next PITAA Heads meeting.

“It is anticipated the new office will be fully functional from September following the 13th PITAA Heads Meeting that will be hosted here in Fiji.

“The secretariat is grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their cooperation and assistance.”

With the Government’s assistance, the PITAA Secretariat aims to provide a forum for Pacific Island countries to discuss and share experiences on tax administration and policy issues.

“Fiji being the hub of the Pacific will lead and support its PITAA members to improve their capacity and capabilities,” Mr Das said.

“We are looking forward to set up a fully-fledged PITAA Secretariat in Fiji and help promote international tax administration standards in the Pacific.”

PITAA Background

PITAA is a regional organisation that was established in 2003 with a membership of 16 countries.

The 12th PITAA Heads Meeting was hosted in Papua New Guinea last year with the theme ‘“Modernizing Tax Administration in the Region”.
