Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina won his second title in his third finals at the Fijian Pro in Cloudbreak, Tavarua Island yesterday.

He won $US100,000 to beat Australia’s Matt Wilkinson into second spot on the world championship ranking.

Wilkinson struggled to find the right waves in the final while Medina claimed two high-scoring tube rides to win with an impressive score 15.60 to 6.34 respectively.

“Winning is always a best thing for me and the final is always tough as I did have bad results in the beginning of the tour,” he said.

“I just loved the barrels of waves during the Fiji Pro as I found my way with the big waves to win.”

Current world number one Wilkinson said he did not expected to be ousted in the final.

“It was a tough final and I could not get the barrel as Medina had and I got jealous as he won,” the Australia surfer said.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater who was impressive but was defeated by Medina in the semi-finals while Wilkinson managed to defeat his close mate Adrian Buchan in the semi-finals.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq Koya praised the organiser of World Surfing League for bringing the event to our shores.

“I thank the organisers and the host for the event, Tavarua and Namotu in organising a fabulous world class event,” he said.

“Thank the sponsors and the Government in the wholesome contribution to making it the success. There has been a vast growth in the surfing as this boosts the tourism side of it.”

The event is the fifth stop out of the 11 in the World Surfing League and it sponsored by Samsung Galaxy, Corona Extra, Go Pro, Jeep, Airbib, Tavarua Island Resort and Namotu Island Resort.
