Interpol has been alerted as the search for a missing Russian couple intensifies.

Chief of Intelligence and Crime SSP Luke Navela confirmed this yesterday.

It is believed this was done with a possible scenario that the couple may have boarded a yacht and fled the country.

SSP Navela also confirmed that as part of their investigations, police were now looking into the financial records of the couple.

Yuri Shipulin and his wife, Natalia left their farm in the hills of Kachiquari, which is off a feeder road on the way to Nausori Highlands, in Nadi, sometime after midday last Thursday.

According to a Police source, the couple were spotted a little later at Denarau Island having some drinks.

Later that same afternoon, the couple’s vehicle, a grey metallic Toyota Land Cruiser, bearing the registration ‘PILOT’, was found at Natadola Beach, the doors unlocked with the keys still in the ignition.

It is believed Police found clothing inside the vehicle belonging to Natalia and which was said to be the one she was wearing on Thursday.

Their business partner, Andrew Luzanenko told the Fiji Sun the couple were going through a financial crisis after their fruit and vegetable farm was ravaged by Cyclone Winston, affecting their business.

Earlier Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said Police were exploring all avenues to find out where the couple were.

“We need to do this so as to see what we come up with as we are still in the early stage of the investigations,” Mr Qiliho said.

SSP Navela said the couple were still listed as missing persons.

A Police team, made up of detectives from Lautoka and Nadi searched the couple’s farm and at Natadola Beach, but failed to find any clues.

Their investigations included interviewing some people who knew or saw the couple before they disappeared.

The couple, from Ryazan City, in Russia had been in the country for the past five years, but according to Mr Luzanenko, they had been running the farm for the past two years. Edited by Rusiate Mataika
