Ten Navosa farmers, charged with unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs, appeared at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

They appeared  before Magistrate Tomasi Bainivalu.

They are the first people brought to court after a joint Police-military operation called Operation Cavuraka in the Navosa highlands raided marijuana farms.

The first four accused, Iliesa Soqali, 38, Savenaca Kulanisa, 44, Serupepeli Wesivakarua, 27 and Salesi Tukana,35, pleaded guilty and have been remanded in the Sigatoka Police Station for sentencing today.

Meanwhile, the other six, Apolosi Kurikoro,19, Tomasi Tubunibua, 24, Semi Tabaiwalu, 24,Kuridroa Kolikoli, 29, Mikaele Sovea, 38, Jone Kolikoli, 25, pleaded not guilty and have been remanded in Natabua Prison. They will re-appear in court on July 4.

They are charged with Unlawful Cultivation of Illicit Drugs contrary to section 5 (a) of the Illicit Drug Control Act 2004.

Tubunibua, Tabaiwalu, Kuridroa Kolikoli and Jone Kolikoli are represented by legal aid lawyers, while the rest will represent themselves. Edited by Nemani Delaibatiki
