If Fiji accedes the Hague Convention of 1996 it will strengthen the role of parents in the family, says the Assemblies of God Fiji in their submissions on the Convention in Parliament yesterday.

General Treasurer Reverend Peni Leweniqila told the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence that family had always been the most important unit in Fiji.

He said the convention would strengthen parents’ role in upbringing, training, molding and shaping children to be better citizens of tomorrow.

“Such initiatives and programmes as the 1996 Convention which aim at addressing the need of the most vulnerable in our families; the children ought to receive our full support and occasion,” he said.

“We have nothing to lose and everything to gain whilst giving our support to the 1996 Convention.”
