Papua New Guinea ‘golden fish’ Ryan Pini said he was on track for the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.

Pini won silver in the men’s 50 metres butterfly in the Oceania swimming championships at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva.

Australia’s Cameron Jones won gold with a time of 24.27seconds and Daniel Hunter of New Zealand finished third clocking 24.62seconds.

“This is my sixth Oceania championship competition and it’s great,”Pini said.

“It’s really good to come out to a good pool and get that race, the last big competition before the Olympics.

“I’m in the middle of my preparation for the Olympics and so far so good, I feel great about my performance so far.”

Pini was impressed with young swimmers.

“I’ve been competing against Jones in Australia and good to see young guys getting out there and making a mark.

“We are looking forward to the next three days to get better times.”

As for his Rio preparation, Pini vows to do his best.

“I can’t expect anything too much, only the best from me.”

Pini finished in fourth place in the 100m backstroke with a time of 57.34.

Jones enjoys race

Even though Jones is not part of the Australian team for the Olympics, he enjoyed racing with Pini last night.

“It was quite close, it was good to have good competition and a big crowd, “he said.

“Pini is obviously the crowd favorite, it’s great to come out here and race in a good competition.

“I’m not in Rio team but I’m happy to come out here and do some fast racing, this is great.”
