The department of energy has been allocated $14.9million for the extension of electricity supply, solar home system installation, house wiring, and clearing of electrification project backlog.

Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel said Government had taken up the initiative to electrify Fiji.

“The goal of Government is to ensure that by 2020, everyone in Fiji has access to electricity. We have already discussed the projects and FEA is prepared to execute those upcoming projects,” Mr Patel said.

He confirmed this allocated amount would be invested in various projects for extension of grid to supply electricity.

“As the amount flows in, the projects will be developed and construction will start to electrify those areas,” he said.

“Out of 173,000 FEA customers, we have around 4000 customers left to reconnect with FEA after Tropical Cyclone Winston hit Fiji.

“This allocated amount will be invested firstly on people who do not have access to electricity and we will make sure to extend our lines and supply them electricity.”

He confirmed that victims affected by TC Winston shall receive electricity by the end of August.
