With the new 2016-2017 Budget, Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts is given $42.5 million to continue with the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme.

TELS board chairman Dixon Seeto said these 30 new scholarship opportunities would be a boost in the Fijian economy.

“Any increase in the scholarship programme is beneficial for the country as it gives more allocation to people who are subjected to free scholarships,” Mr Seeto said.

“These scholarships will be in areas of demand; catering for subjects which was not under the loans scheme before,” he said.

He said some of the areas that would fall under the TELS loans scheme were technical, medical science, and some commercial areas.

“These fields will need to be worked out in our meeting with the Ministry of Education and TELS board before the scholarships are allocated,” he said.

“The toppers are the top students from various places around the country and they are the ones becoming our future leaders so the more of them come forward the better for the development of the country,” Mr Seeto said.

The Government will also provide grants for the National Toppers Scheme, existing scholarship scheme, scholarships for Children with Special Needs, Commercial Agriculture scholarships and cyclone rehabilitation of schools.
